The linear density is the thickness of the fiber and yarn.
It can be directly expressed by the cross-sectional diameter, cross-sectional perimeter or cross-sectional area of fibers and yarns. When the cross-sectional shape is close to circular, the thickness is expressed in diameter, and its measurement unit is microns or millimeters. However, the cross-sections of fibers and yarns are generally irregular and fine. The measurement of diameter or cross-sectional area must be measured one by one under a microscope with eyepiece micrometer and objective micrometer, or on a microscope projector. The test is time-consuming and laborious. Besides, fibers and yarns are uneven in thickness. Using the average diameter of the cross-section as the linear density index may affect the evaluation results. Because the length and weight test is more convenient, therefore, the relationship between length and weight is often used in production to indirectly express its thickness. That is, an indirect indicator is used to represent the linear density of fibers and yarns. Indirect indicators of linear density are divided into fixed-length and fixed-weight systems.
